Hull was amongst the most innovative artists of the Post War period, with abstract compositions dating the early 1940s. Later in the decade, Gimpel Fils Gallery signed him under contract during the late 1940s and hosted his first one-man show. The avant-garde London gallery continued to exhibit Hull alongside Hilton, Hepworth, Frost and Lanyon. During the 1950s and 1960s, Hull exhibited in Paris, Rome and New York.
