Whitford dedicates its inaugural exhibition in Brussels to a dialogue across continents and time between
Aboriginal Australian Kudditji Kngwarrey (c. 1928 – 2017)
and
Belgian-French Joseph Joseph Lacasse (1894-1975).
Both artists were true free spirits, bravely pursuing their inner visions despite the pressures of their respective markets. Yet, they persevered, and rooted in their profound mythical and mystical beliefs, ultimately achieved their true selves in their artistic expression.
Unaware of each other’s existence, having lived and worked in opposite corners of our planet and under vastly different geographical conditions, these two artists now invite us to contemplate the universal language of mythology and ancestral wisdom. The juxtaposition of the indigenous Australian artist and the Western painter weaves together a vibrant palette with a shared commitment to holistic nurturing, whilst drawing inspiration from our human origins and our deep-rooted connection to the land.
