Throughout his adventurous life, Ralph Rumney was in constant flight from the wreckage of Post-War Europe. Crossing paths with every avant-garde of the 20th Century, Rumney’s life story is spellbinding. Rumney was one of the main members of the London Psychogeographical Association, which was involved in the formation of the Situationist International (S.I.), an international organization of social revolutionaries made up of avant-garde artists, intellectuals and political theorists. The group was active in Europe during 1957 – 1972 and aimed at breaking the rules of art.
As a psychogeographist Rumney wandered Europe to describe in his art the effect of a geographical location on the emotions and behaviour of individuals. He saw his life as a constant experiment. In 1957 he met Pegeen Guggenheim whom he married in 1958. The fraught relationships between Peggy, her daughter Pegeen and husband are well documented.
