Mildred Bendall

Whitford Fine Art, 1998. £5.00

Milderd Bendall's work is a celebration of colour. Born in 1981 in Bordeaux, Bendall studied at the atelier of Felix Carme before entering the Académie de la Grande-Chaumière in Montparnasse, frequented at the time by Braque, Giacometti, Picasso, Rouault, Leger, Utrillo, Marquet and Matisse. Here she met and befriended Matisse who greatly influenced her work.

The year in Paris revolutionised Bendall's thinking. She began to consider colours for the first time as building blocks for creating forms and space, as well as suggesting mood. Influenced by the Fauves, she developed an expressive use of colour to which she remained loyal for the rest of her life.

"If she is not unrecognised giant of modern art, she certainly deserves an honourable place alongside Marquet and Dufy". John Russell Taylor, The Times, 1987
