CLIVE BARKER: RECENT WORKS
 CLIVE BARKER: Recent Works Whitford Fine Art is pleased to announce an exhibition of recent works by BRITISH POP ART sculptor Clive Barker (b.1940), with a preview in presence of the Artist. The exhibition shows Barker’s recent works, in which he has revisited in a refreshing and playful way some of his favourite themes including foodstuffs, practical everyday objects, children’s toys, animated film characters and mythology. Moving on from his favoured cakes, breads and cheeses, Barker presents us with seductive plates of crustaceans, figs and pears as well as a masculine ‘Ham on the Bone’. Mythological-historical subjects include ‘King Arthur’s Sword’ (right), planted in a heavy bronze anvil. The animated television series character Homer Simpson (below) is frozen in his stereotypical gluttonous grin, and particularly draws attention to Barker’s love of contrast between the lively nature of the subject and the stillness of its counterpart cast in bronze. This contrast is also brilliantly employed in ‘Three Light Bulbs’, where an ordinary translucent functional object such as a light bulb, is suddenly transformed into an object of desire in a solid opaque material. With ‘Toy Train’, a children’s favourite becomes a grown-up must-have. Barker’s love affair with highly polished metals started in 1964 with his iconic ‘Two Palettes for Jim Dine’. For over forty years he has worked in chrome plated bronze, polished aluminium and bronze. As a protégé of the legendary art dealer Robert Fraser, and Erica Brausen of the Hanover Gallery, Barker was at the heart of the British Pop Art Movement in 1960’s swinging London. Over the years, Barker has remained true to the essence of Pop Art and his latest replicas of functional objects of mass-culture in gleaming bronze continue to investigate the fundamentals of both traditional and Modernist sculpture, in particular Marcel Duchamp’s concept of the ready-made. A fully illustrated catalogue with an introduction by An Jo Fermon will accompany the exhibition.
