First works by Metzinger were influenced by Neo-Impressionism and Fauvism.
In 1903 he went to Paris where he became a member of the Cubist school, exhibiting with them in 1910 and 1911.
Metzinger was a founding member of the Section d’Or in 1912, and in the following year he was represented in the Sturm exhibition in Berlin.
After the war his style became more realistic with affinities to the Neue Sachlichkeit.
He was active in the dissemination of Cubist ideas and is remembered for the book Du Cubisme, which he wrote in collaboration with Gleizes.
