After working as an industrial designer he began to paint around 1900 and became a member of the Cubist school, exhibiting with them in 1910 and 1911.
He was a founding member of the Section d’Or in 1912 and with Metzinger he wrote an influential book Du Cubisme.
He was active in publicizing Cubism both in Europe and in America, and initiated the formation of an artist colony at Moly-Sabata near Vienne and in 1939 became at the centre of another group of painters when he settled at Saint Rémy, Provence.
In 1950 he participated in an exhibition of Sacred Art at the Vatican.
A large retrospective exhibition of his work was shown at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York in 1964.
