Sculptor and influential teacher Dalwood worked in a variety of materials, sometimes moulding and sometimes casting his forms, which were abstract and resembled primitive art.
During the Second World War he was apprenticed to the British Aeroplane Company, then he served in the Royal Navy from 1944-46 before studying at the Bath Academy, Corsham. He instantly took a liking to sculpture, working mainly in metals and fibreglass.
He showed for many years at Gimpel Fils, London and in 1962 he won first prize for sculpture at the Venice Biennale.
His commissions include a large number for many British universities and he also initiated the Arts Council ‘Art into landscape’ competition and exhibition while a member of the Serpentine Gallery committee.
He was appointed as Associate of the Royal Academy in 1976 and sadly died soon after.
A retrospective memorial show was held at the Hayward Gallery in 1979 and another at Hebden Bridge Arts Festival in 1996.
