Zao Wou-Ki (Chinese-French 1920-2013)

Born in Bejing, Zao is an internationally acclaimed and China's best known artist. Zao studied traditional calligraphy before training at the prestigious Hangszhou school of Fine Arts, during 1935-1941. In 1948, Zao emigrated to Paris where he settled in Montparnasse next to the studio of Othon Friesz. He attended the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, and underwent the influence of Matisse, Picasso and Cézanne and early admirers of this work included Miró and Picasso. In 1957 Zao visited his brother in New York and became familiar with the budding Pop Art movement and Abstract Expressionism. Although his work is stylistically close to that of the Abstract Expressionists, Zao's 'explosions' of light structures are more of a remnant of Impressionism. Zao became a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts, Paris and has known enormous success during his lifetime.
