Ingrid Baars (Dutch b. 1969)
A graduate of the Willem de Kooning Academy of Arts, Rotterdam, Ingrid Baars centres her photography around the female body. Her fascination with the human shape was roused by the expression of her own feelings through physical movement during her ballet practice as a teenager. Baars manipulates different photographic images to reconstruct an idea, a feeling or a metaphor, and aims to capture the emotions of presence, melancholy, power, controlled sexuality and vulnerability. Her series l'Afrique c'est Chic captures the far reaching influence of the African Arts on Western modern art, thus lending her the opportunity to explore the human physiognomy from a new and free angle.
