Phillips is one of the most impressive English artists of his generation, whose work ranges from oils on canvas to multi-image compositions with photo realist or collage elements with paint. He was the toughest of the English Pop artists who made reputation in the early 60s, and in many ways the least English, in the whimsical, literary sense. His commitment to Pop was most vividly confirmed by living in America since 1964 - 1966, where he developed even more ruthless variations on the imaginery and procedures he had proposed when a student at the RCA in the early 1960s.
