Anthony Caro, RA (British b. 1924)
Caro's initial work was figurative in bronze, but 1959 saw a change to non-figurative pieces. He became famous for bolted and welded steel and aluminium sculptures, which were light and graceful and later moved towards monumental works. The rugged and emphatically non-aesthetic surface of these sculptures combines an intentional heaviness of form with a sense of rugged bravura to create an image of heroic stoicism.
