Lipchitz was 18 when he moved to Paris from Lithuania to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Julian. It was not long before he met Picasso, Gris and Braque and in 1912 he began exhibiting at the Salon National des Beaux-Arts and the Salon d'Automne. Lipchitz held an influential position amongst the artists associated with Cubism as he applied the Cubist notions of form and perspective to his innovative sculptures.
