Renowned as an Abstract Expressionist painter, printmaker and writer since 1946, Frank Avray Wilson was also a scientist with a Masters Degree in Biology from Cambridge. He studied art in France and Norway and, along with Denis Bowen and John Milnes-Smith, produced some of the most dynamic abstracts of the post-war period in Britain. His work ranged from spiky, linear, or geometric compositions to a mature style suffused with energy; he was the first painter in England to apply the techniques and methods of Action Painting and Tachism. At times, he focused greatly on symbols, bringing into play his scientific background.
