Anthony Caro, RA

Anthony Caro, RA (British b. 1924)

Caro's initial work was figurative in bronze, but 1959 saw a change to non-figurative pieces. He became famous for bolted and welded steel and aluminium sculptures, which were light and graceful and later moved towards monumental works.

He marked a definite move away from the style of both the older artists such as Moore and Hepworth, and his own immediately preceding generation of sculptors such as Butler and Chadwick by creating works, which explored the possibilities of the surface available to him.

The rugged and emphatically non-aesthetic surface of these sculptures combines an intentional heaviness of form with a sense of rugged bravura to create an image of heroic stoicism.

Sculptures such as the important Woman Waking Up (Collection Tate Gallery), use the unusual technique of placing stones and pebbles into the clay base to add extra volume to the forms.
